Breckenridge has a Thriving Art Scene

If you’ve never visited before, you might be surprised to learn that Breckenridge is an art lover’s haven. From a handful of incredible galleries to the sprawling array of outdoor sculptures and exhibitions, art can be found in just about every corner of this cozy little mountain town and it’s easy to find a piece of art that you can fall in love with.

So if you’re looking to appreciate the artsy side of Breck, we’ve gathered together an all-inclusive guide to art galleries in Breckenridge to help you figure out which ones you should put on your itinerary. Although Breck’s art scene may be small, it is mighty, and any one of these galleries are worth a visit if you have the time.

Breckenridge Gallery

Your first stop on your journey through Breck’s art galleries should be at Breckenridge Gallery, also known as the longest-running gallery in all of Summit County. Opened in 1969 by original owners Gary and Janet Freese, Breckenridge Gallery was an important foundation for the Breck art scene and continues to be today under its new owners, Tina Rossi and Alex Kendall. There’s a good reason this gallery has been open for over 50 years–the art found there is out of this world and worth purchasing if your budget allows.

At Breckenridge Gallery, you’ll find a myriad of styles and subjects, including classic Western-themed landscapes by artists like John Rasberry and Isaiah Ratterman as well as more abstract and impressionist works, like the art of Andrea Keeger or Mick Shimonek. Not only will you find paintings at this gallery, there is also a variety of sculptures available to both peruse and purchase, including the artistic creations of Gary Hale and Jim Gilmore, along with jewelry created by Anne Forbes.

Raitman Art Galleries

If you’re looking to spend the day taking in some of the best art in Breckenridge, there’s no better place to do it than at Raitman Art Galleries. This family-owned business consists of two galleries, with one located on South Main Street and the other just up the road, on North Main Street, making it easy to visit both on an art-soaked day. Anyone hoping to spruce up their space with a new piece of art is in luck–these galleries offer complimentary interior decorating consultations.

The eclectic and diverse collections at both galleries are worth seeing, however, even if you don’t plan to purchase anything. At Raitman Art Galleries, there are a variety of different types of art, including everything from the wild and colorful style of David V. Gonzales’ paintings to the whimsical glass art of Robert Madvin. Another plus of visiting the galleries is that they often have artist appearances, allowing you to connect with your favorite Colorado artists.

Gary Soles Gallery

The work of world-renowned landscape photographer Gary Soles is on another level, and one of the easiest ways to get a glimpse into the lens of this talented artist is to take a visit to the Gary Soles Gallery, located on South Main Street in Breck.

It’s one thing to view these images on a computer screen and gaze in awe at their flawless composition and framing, but seeing these large-format photographs in real life truly shows you the level of talent and artistry that Soles captures in each of his works.

No matter what your budget looks like, there is something for every price point, whether that means purchasing a few prints as gifts for loved ones or making the commitment to invest in one of the larger photos that will become the centerpiece of any room. While you’re exploring Breck’s art scene, the Gary Soles Gallery is one that you don’t want to miss out on, especially if you want to bring a little piece of the Colorado landscape home with you.

Mountainkind

Not interested in looking at art that’s out of your budget? Check out mountainkind, located on South Main Street. This funky gallery and home decor shop is a great break from the more staid and traditional galleries found in Breck and it won’t hit your wallet nearly as hard. Inside mountainkind, which is housed in a gorgeous old Victorian, you’ll find an eclectic collection of items for sale, including paintings, handmade blankets and pillows, candles, leather journals, hand-painted glasses, and more, all made by local Colorado artists and artisans.

Opened by owners Brian Stokes and Ali Delaney in 2021, this gallery and decor shop is one of the newest additions to the Breckenridge art scene. And mountainkind does stand out, especially because its owners strive to make art more accessible to the average person in the area by offering more affordable items made by local artists, which range from $5 to $1,000. Before you round off your tour of Breck’s art galleries, be sure to check out mountainkind for some more affordable options to bring home to family and friends.
