Mountaintop Children’s Explorium
The Mountaintop Explorium is the perfect interactive children’s museum for ages 1-14. All of the exhibits promote hands-on learning and help kids to build skills like creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. There’s even an exhibit for the toddlers and smaller children in your family, which will engage them with activities like a ball ramp, balance bar, and building blocks to stimulate their young minds.

Visit Highline Railroad Park
Breckenridge is full to the brimming with train history, and one easy way to educate yourself and your family about it is to take a trip to Highline Railroad Park. While this park does have all the normal equipment that you’d expect from a playground, there are also a few special things to see, like Engine No. 9, an 1800s-era train that once rode the tracks around Breckenridge. There’s also a caboose, a boxcar, and a rotary snowplow that kids can explore at this special park. If anyone in your family is a railroad enthusiast, this is the perfect place to take them to give them a taste of Breck’s long and storied railroad history.
Sledding at Carter Park or Runway Hill
Snowy activities are always a highlight of visits to Breckenridge, and that’s why sledding should be on your list for your next family adventure. Both Carter Park and the newer Runway Hill offer free walk-up sledding hills for you and your family to enjoy. Runway Hill offers a man-made sledding hill, while Carter Park is a bit bigger and has a wider sledding area, although it can get a bit crowded at times due to its popularity. Both hills have sled sheds, where you pick up a sled to use and then return it when you’re done.
Show Off Your Ice Skating Skills
A year-round activity that offers something for every age is ice skating at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, which features both an indoor and outdoor arena. This popular spot offers you and your family the perfect layer of ice to practice your skills on, with affordable skate rentals and ice skating lessons for those who are just starting out.
Come and glide over the ice with your kids and family at this skating arena, and even if you fall, you’ll still be creating a treasured memory to share for the future.
Visit the Breckenridge Troll, Isak Heartstone
While you’re parked at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena for a round of ice skating, take this opportunity to visit the Breckenridge Troll, Isak Heartstone. This giant sculpture can be found just off of the Illinois Gulch trail, a short walk away from the ice arena. It’s made entirely of recycled wood materials and features a stone at its heart, hence the name “Heartstone”.
Built by Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist and sculptor who has built many trolls around the world, this sculpture will be a sight to see for you and your family.
Find a Kid’s Adventure Zone on the Mountain
No matter whether your little ones are ready to ski down the toughest hills or they’re just starting out, there’s something for just about any age on Breckenridge Mountain. The kids will love the beginner hills of Peak 8 as well as fun runs like Dragon Trail, which sends them down a trail through the woods that features a castle. Peak 9 also has adventure zones, like Riperoo’s Forest and Haunted Forest, for kids to enjoy.
